Kalimpong is a very old hill station of British India, and now it is part of the state of West Bengal. It is located at an altitude of 4,100 feet and overlooks the Teesta River. The town is surrounded by snow clad peaks of the mighty Himalayas on all sides. Its unique location, pleasant weather, enchanting natural beauty makes it a magical tourist place.
Kalimpong area has been under the occupation of the Sikkimese, Bhutanese and the Gorkhas at various times. The area formed part of British India after the Anglo-Bhutan War of 1864. Scottish missionaries arrived in the area at this time and established a number of schools and educational institutions here.

Kalimpong is located on National Highway 31-A connecting Sevoke to Gangtok. The nearest airport to Kalimpong is Bagdogra (IXB) which is located at a distance of 80 km. New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest Railway Station on the broad gauge and is located 73 km away.
Best time to Visit
Kalimpong is blessed with a very pleasant weather around the year. Spring, summer, monsoon, autumn and winter are the main seasons of this place. The maximum temperature of the area is around 25 degrees C in summers and it gets cold up to 7 degrees C in winters. It rains for almost 100 days in a year. March to June and September to December is the best time to visit the place.
Clothes to be carried
Summer clothes with light woolens are suitable for a visit to Kalimpong, but woolens are required during the winter season, especially in the months of January and February. A raincoat or umbrella must be carried during the monsoon season.
Places to visit
Teesta Bazar It is the primary market of Kalimpong. The bazaar is a shoppers’ paradise. One can find many artifacts and handicraft items from China, Tibet and Bhutan here. It is well known for Khukris, Tankhas, tea cups, copper and silverware and also silver jewelry.
Deolo Hill This is the highest point of Kalimpong and from here the view of the hills and valleys around Kalimpong is simply breathtaking. The place also has a recreational park. Adventure sports like paragliding, horse riding and trekking are also a major attraction and draw a lot of tourists to this location.
Kalimpong Cactus Nursery A very broad variety of cactus and orchids are grown in this nursery. The nursery provides a very peaceful and pleasant sanctuary to the tourists. The view of the surrounding areas from the nursery is amazing.
Zong Dog Palri Fo Brang Gompa It is an ancient Buddhist monastery constructed under the guidance of Dalai Lama in 1975. The place is of immense religious significance for Buddhists. The monastery houses some very rare texts and exquisite works of art.
Kalimpong Science Centre The science center is a great attraction for kids. Dinosaur Park and a screening of a 3D movie are the main attractions of the center. A visit to this place is very informative and educative.
Local population or demography Kalimpong is a cosmopolitan town with a population of around 50,000. Nepalis, Lepchas and Tibetans are the major ethnic groups residing in the town. People of the area mainly speak Nepali, Hindi, English and Bengali.
